composite = YELLOW cable = 480i/576i
component = RGB cable = 480p/576p
if you want the best possible resolution then you will have to use a component cable...those are the ones on ebay for 150$

So anyway, really, I can get 576i out of the cheap composite (yellow, $3 on eBay) cable? That's awesome!
I am going to mod mine with xenoGC, do you need to use Swiss to force 576i over composite?

a PAL GC will natively output 576

To play PAL games on NTSC gc, do I need a pal iso/disc? Or do the games include both? Or does swiss handle the conversion?
Lastly, what is the best thing to do after xenoGC mod with wii gecko adapter and 8gb SDCH and 10 blank mini DVD-r? Should I burn sdLoad to a disk and auto boot a swiss.dol off the card? I'm a total n00b so any tips appreciated!
Oh! One last question, can someone answer, if I boot swiss off a SD card, can I still emulate a memory slot in that card? As in, I have gecko in slot A, and a real card in slot B. can I emulate a card to a game to think it has 2 cards plugged in? (I'd like to be able to backup my game saves somehow to a real card, should one come with the gc I buy).

you can emulate a memory card (not rather good compatibility at the moment) to SDGecko in slot A, but it won't let you use a real card in slot B at the same time.

So component is basically twice the fps? As far just GameCube goes (since its not hd. I know component can supply much more resolution than composite).
Also what I mean, in order to get 576i, do I need a PAL game?
I'm thinking that I do. Right? Or do games have both resolutions (480i and 576i) included and can easily be forced in swiss on boot? Because I want to compare them 1 after the other to decide what looks best on my tv.

but we haven't even played a bluray on it yet. just dvd. The br player is in the mail.

The cable colors are as RGB as they can get. Besides, RGB cables transmitting RGB are just capable of progressive too.
As far your TV goes, cheapest will be Scart RGB (576i), the best available component/VGA (576p). Swiss can output almost any game in desired format.

what is your TV? NTSC or PAL??
whatever TV type you have, look for that type gamecube...
why? because you will have to spend 150$ on a GC component cable from ebay and no you cant make your own mod at this time...so this may get confusing:
NTSC GC = composite or svideo
PAL GC = composite or RGB (not RGB colored component cables, actual RGB signal and no you cannot use this on a VGA monitor)
some NTSC TVs dont like PAL composite...
some PAL TVs dont like NTSC composite...
so it all comes down to which region will be properly displayed on your TV....
this gets very confusing very quickly until you run a lot of different tests...
best thing, whatever region you are in, buy that region gamecube...

It's somehow complicated all these video signal.
As I'm french, i always had problems with video, like all European people. And even more because in France we had the special SECAM format.
The goal for each new console was to find the "holly" RGB scart cable, from Nintendo64 to Wii, meaning GameCube, PS1, PS2, XBOX, etc.
For older models, there were many mods for getting this bloody 50-60Hz switch, like SEGA 8-16 bits, SuperNintendo or Saturn. So you had your game at full speed, with smoother scrolling.
But I have a question, maybe dumb but, well, at least i'll have an answer :p

Because 60Hz NTSC fills all the screen with 480 lines of video whilst 50Hz PAL displays those same 480 lines plus the addiontional 96 lines of the PAL format making up the black borders.
60Hz PAL is actually 480 lines just like NTSC but with the PAL colour coding.

A component cable is capable of carrying both interlaced and progressive signals, so not necessarily. Progressive scan doesn't really mean twice the FPS, but I guess that's one way to look at it.mat8888 wrote:So component is basically twice the fps?
An interlaced signal send half frames. That is, it'll send the odd lines one frame, the even lines the next frame, repeat. Your eyes don't notice as they blend the lines together. Interlaced exists because it saves bandwidth for broadcasts (you're only sending half of the image each time).
I honestly don't know. My guess would be that you would just get a bordered 480i signal if you forced an NTSC game to use the PAL resolution. I looked up what DLP is. Just like LCD and plasma TVs, it's a fixed-pixel display, so the Gamecube's video signal will have to be upscaled to fit, with varying results depending on the quality of your TV's upscaler.Also, no deff not CRT.I think DLP or something.
