Is it true that someone is working on a Homebrew DAC chip to make use of the digital port for component out? If so, how much progress have they made?

Yes there is an almost working one by OzOnE and another guy just started to work on one. Just search for direct HDMI and you'll find both threads.

try using the forum search or spend some time looking around the forum to find the status you are looking for
